MRI Incidental Findings Policy
MRI scans conducted for research at the Rotman MRI are not intended for diagnostic, clinical or medical use. However, most of our research studies contain at least one scan, usually a structural T1 image, which our technologists will review for incidental findings. Research participants receiving an MRI scan must be informed of the possibility of incidental findings. Research participants must consent in advance of their participation to the review of their research scans by a qualified health professional for clarification of suspected incidental findings. The participant will be assisted in procuring appropriate medical follow-up so that an appropriate clinician can disclose the incidental findings.
The Baycrest REB website contains a link to the “Research MRI wording for consent forms” template document. This document contains mandatory wording pertaining to incidental findings that must be included on the Informed Consent Form for all research projects at the Rotman MRI.
The procedure that will be followed when incidental findings occur is documented in the official Baycrest “MRI Incidental Findings” policy document. When the PI needs to be involved, our senior technologist will reach out with instructions and a copy of the policy document. If you would like to see the document in advance, please contact Senior MR Technologist Garry Detzler for a copy.
